    SCALES OF INTANGIBILITY

A collaborative project with artist in residence Susan Eyre at Chisenhale Art Place - Exploring the nature of the Dodecahedron and movement within it.

The project draws upon Susan’s enquiry on the nature of the Universe and its particles. Referring to Dante's description of the universe as concentric circles, Susan was interested in seeing movement representing the very outer circles also appear to be enclosed by the inner circles and the relationship that this enfolding space has to a 3-sphere and Poincaré dodecahedral space as a motif for the universe. Plato thought the human being in body and soul is actually a microcosm of the cosmic macrocosm, that our virtue and our flourishing is rooted in mathematical harmony. As not much has been said by Laban about this Platonic Solid, I have collected theoretical material then used a somatic approach to carve movements by investigating in my feelings and perceptions. To further this I referred to the Trefoil Knots, the notions of Planes, Shape and Space Intent to adapt to the Content and Container of the Dodec, to name a few. The video post editing has overlapped images from the cloud chamber and of my moving body. These has finally been displayed in a hydroponic tent for the artist’s installation.

    SELphOBiA - The Invisible Reflection

This solo dance piece talks about one's perception showing a crossroad of possibilities between deterioration and resolution. Far from being a chronological telling, the performer transitions in between states of mental confined space trying to make her body invisible and a foregrounded sense of fascination to herself and others.

This performance follows a period of intensive research on the topics of inner/outer spatial constraint, body polarities, effort dosing, emotional alteration, mind-body effects and self presence/invisibility in relation to our environment.

In particular observation of skin picking disorder, dysmorphia and chirophobia has extensively taken place during the development phase.

‘What I felt was BEING in the moment of expressing individuality. Being free to be without judgement, living in the moment while breaking the chains of restrictions. Lots of self questioning, leaving the audience to fill in the gaps’. Jackie – An audience member

    DANCE FOR CONFINED SPACE

Dance for Confined Space is a site specific work choreographed and performed by Paola Napolitano, and filmed and edited by Gregory White. Thematically, the work is concerned with enclosure and suppression in both the physical and psychological realms. The oppressive nature of this particular space is reflected in Napolitano’s movement, restricted and forced to perform in a particular way. The held poses and expressions serve to reinforce this sense of enclosure, simultaneously providing a window into the emotional and psychological undertones of the piece. G.W.

Dance for Confined Space has been screened at the Light Moves Festival 2015, in Limerick, Ireland.
